The Reality of Modern Cyber Extortion
A successful backup job is reassuring. A successful recovery test is far more useful. Ransomware can threaten both production systems and recovery copies, while stolen information can remain exposed even after systems are restored.
If you are searching for ransomware proof backup solutions in India, start with a practical distinction: no design is completely attack-proof. The goal is ransomware resilience—protected recovery copies, separate access controls and a restoration process your team has tested.
For CIOs and business owners, the key question is not simply whether data is backed up. It is whether critical applications can be restored safely, within a recovery window the business can tolerate.
Why Standard Cloud Backups May Not Be Enough
Cloud storage is not inherently unsafe, and an on-premises copy is not inherently secure. Risk depends on configuration, access and recovery design. Backups that share administrative credentials or remain broadly accessible from production systems may be exposed when those systems are compromised.
Veeam describes the 3-2-1-1-0 rule as a useful backup design checklist:
- 3 copies: keep production data and at least two backup copies.
- 2 media types: diversify the storage used for your copies.
- 1 offsite copy: protect against loss at a single location.
- 1 immutable or offline copy: add a recovery copy resistant to alteration or deletion.
- 0 recovery errors: test restores, investigate failures and resolve them. This is a verification goal, not a guarantee that future recoveries cannot fail.
Architecting an Isolated and Immutable Defence
A useful recovery plan starts with two business decisions: the recovery time objective (RTO), or target time to restore a service, and the recovery point objective (RPO), or acceptable data-loss window. These targets influence backup frequency, storage, connectivity and testing. Actual recovery depends on the incident and the available systems.
1. Immutable Data Backups and Retention Controls
Immutability is designed to prevent changes or deletion during a configured retention period. Veeam offers immutable backup options, including hardened repositories. Product choice, platform support and configuration matter; immutability does not replace repository hardening, protected credentials or physical security.
When evaluating Veeam, Acronis or another backup platform, ask which workloads are supported, how retention is enforced and how recovery will be tested. Match retention to business and data-handling requirements rather than keeping every copy indefinitely.
2. Offline Copies and Network Isolation
A genuinely offline copy is disconnected from network access. A repository that reconnects on a schedule has periods of exposure and should not be described as permanently air-gapped. Document those connection windows and the controls protecting them.
Separate backup administration from routine production administration, limit access paths and maintain a protected recovery copy. CISA recommends offline, encrypted backups and regular testing of their availability and integrity.
3. Encryption, IAM and Recovery Access
Include encryption in transit and at rest, least-privilege access and multi-factor authentication in your design. Protect encryption keys and recovery credentials separately, and ensure authorised responders can obtain them during an outage. A protected backup is of limited use if the recovery team cannot access the keys or restore the application dependencies.
How Backups Support DPDP Readiness
India's DPDP Rules, 2025 describe security measures including encryption, access controls, monitoring and arrangements for continued processing after loss or destruction of personal data, such as backups. Their commencement is phased; the rules place Rule 6 within the group commencing eighteen months after Gazette publication. Check the applicable notifications and your organisation's obligations with your legal advisers.
Backups support a wider data protection programme. They do not, by themselves, prove statutory compliance, prevent data theft or remove corporate liability. The impact of a ransomware incident on personal data must be assessed on its facts.
Combine recovery planning with VAPT audits, remediation tracking, access reviews and incident preparation. Our DPDP Ready™ Framework helps connect assessment findings with practical technology and operational improvements.
Take Control of Your Infrastructure Resilience
For business continuity planning in Bengaluru and across India, begin with a scoped review. Identify critical applications and data owners, agree RTO and RPO targets, review backup access and retention, and run a documented restoration test. Use the results to prioritise improvements and assign responsibility.
Peritas helps businesses review existing backup environments, plan improvements and test recovery against agreed objectives. The right next step is a clear view of your current gaps and a realistic restoration plan.
